Minimig v1.98itx 6MB: Real 68K FPGA Amiga in a Mini-ITX Case
The Minimig v1.98itx B52/ROAM is a modern Mini-ITX version of the Minimig concept: an open-source Amiga 500-style computer where the original Amiga custom chipset is implemented in an FPGA, while a real Motorola 68000-family CPU path keeps the machine close to classic 68K hardware.
This 2024 revision focuses on stronger power design, cleaner signal routing, accelerator compatibility, and a more complete ready-to-use package. It includes a 6-layer ENIG PCB, 6 MB of RAM, MC68SEC000 CPU, SD card with the Minimig FPGA core, universal +12V 4A power supply, and the original anodized aluminum case.
Power Regulation
+5V DC-DC regulation, +5V to +12V input support, resettable fuse protection, SBRT Schottky protection, solid capacitors, and rail-status LEDs for +5V, +3.3V, +2.5V, and +1.25V.
Real 68000 CPU
Built around a real MC68SEC000 CPU path, with MC68SEC000 and MC68HC000 support for an authentic 68K Minimig experience.
6 MB RAM
Onboard 6 MB RAM gives the Minimig core more room for practical Amiga configurations than early small-memory builds.
OCS/ECS FPGA Core
Runs the Minimig Amiga OCS/ECS FPGA core, including the newer MIA BootROM-replacement design used on this release.
ARM / FastSPI
Improved FastSPI and controller-side workflow help with SD-card based operation, FPGA core loading, Kickstart handling, and OSD responsiveness.
VGA Video
VGA output makes the board easier to use with common monitors while keeping the classic Amiga-style display workflow.
PS/2 Keyboard & Mouse
PS/2 keyboard and mouse support keeps setup simple and avoids hunting for rare original input devices.
Accelerator Ready
Designed with accelerator compatibility in mind. PiStorm kick.rom caching is supported, TF030 at 50 MHz has been tested, and 68EC020-TK has also been tested.
6-Layer ENIG PCB
Premium 6-layer ENIG board with improved routing and a SIG/PWR-GND stack-up for cleaner power distribution and signal integrity.
Mini-ITX + Case
Mini-ITX form factor with ITX power connector, LED/button headers, included +12V 4A supply, and the original anodized aluminum case.
What Makes Minimig Special
Minimig is not a software emulator running on a PC. It is a hardware reimplementation of the classic Amiga architecture using FPGA logic for the custom chipset, RAM, video, input handling, storage controller workflow, and a real 68000-family CPU path. This makes it appealing for Amiga users who want a compact, serviceable, FPGA-based system that still feels close to original 68K hardware.
2024 v1.98itx Hardware Improvements
- 6-layer ENIG PCB: gold-finished board with improved routing and a repeated SIG/PWR-GND stack-up for stronger signal and power behavior.
- Improved power design: +5V DC-DC regulation, +5V to +12V input support, resettable fuse protection, SBRT Schottky protection, solid capacitors, and onboard power rail LEDs.
- Fast SN74CBTD level shifting: high-speed level shifting for cleaner interfacing between board logic and supported expansion hardware.
- 6 MB RAM: expanded onboard memory for practical Minimig core configurations.
- Mini-ITX form factor: standard compact layout with ITX power connector plus LED and button headers.
- +12V 4A supply included: supplied with a stronger external power supply suitable for typical use and tested accelerator setups.
CPU, Core, and Accelerator Support
- Real MC68SEC000 CPU included: this listing includes the MC68SEC000 CPU installed for real 68K operation.
- MC68SEC000 and MC68HC000 support: designed for supported 68000-family CPU configurations used by the Minimig v1.9x board line.
- New OCS/ECS FPGA core: includes the newer Minimig Amiga OCS/ECS FPGA core with MIA BootROM replacement.
- MIA BootROM replacement: removing the older BootROM path helps improve compatibility with PiStorm and other accelerator configurations.
- PiStorm support: supports PiStorm use, including kick.rom caching, because the BootROM dependency is removed.
- Tested accelerator examples: TF030 at 50 MHz and 68EC020-TK have been tested. Many accelerator boards may work, but not every random 020/030 accelerator is guaranteed.
Ports and Daily Use
- VGA output: convenient video output for modern displays.
- PS/2 keyboard and mouse: practical input support without needing original Amiga keyboard or mouse hardware.
- SD-card workflow: supplied 16 GB SD card contains the Minimig FPGA core for the board.
- Improved FastSPI: improved controller communication for a smoother Minimig storage and setup workflow.
- Power status LEDs: quick visual confirmation for +5V, +3.3V, +2.5V, and +1.25V rails.
